Mellotron
The Mellotron is a unique instrument with a unique sound. It was first used by The Beatles on Strawberry Fields Forever, and has since featured on tracks by David Bowie, Roxy Music, and Radiohead to name but a few.

The Mellotron acted as a primative sample playback device as it used recordings of actual strings, choirs, and flutes. When a key was pressed, a piece of magnetic tape was pulled over a playhead to hear the recorded sound.
Here, the Mellotron has been recreated in the browser, obviously not using tape but the latest technology available - the Web Audio API and Dolby Digital Plus. Each sample has been recorded directly from an original Mellotron, coverted to 5.1 surround sound, and presented here in the Dolby Digital Plus format. Enjoy!
